Dreadlocks Maintenance

Dreadlocks Maintenance in Fort Collins

Locs take real commitment, and honestly, they deserve someone who knows how to take care of them properly. I've been doing dreadlocks maintenance for years now, and whether you're brand new to locs or you've had yours for a while, I'll make sure they stay healthy, neat, and looking the way you want them to.

starting your locs

Before we even get to maintenance, it helps to know how your locs got started, since that affects how they'll grow and how I'll care for them going forward.

two-strand twist

This is probably the method I see most often. Two sections of hair get twisted around each other to form the loc. It tends to look clean right from the start and works well on a lot of different hair textures.

comb coils

For finer or shorter hair, comb coils can lock up faster. I use a small rat-tail comb to twist tiny sections into place, and they tighten up pretty quickly.

Braided or Interlocked Starts

Some people prefer starting with small three-strand braids instead. It usually gives you a fuller, thicker loc once things mature.

If you're not sure which one fits your hair, that's completely fine, that's what our consultation is for. I'll look at your texture and talk through what kind of look and maintenance schedule works for your lifestyle.

Dreadlocks Maintenance Options

Once your locs are established, keeping them up is really what makes the biggest difference long-term.

Retwisting

This is the classic go-to. I apply product to your new growth and twist it back into place so everything stays neat and uniform. Most people come in every four to eight weeks for this, depending on how fast your hair grows

Palm Rolling

If you want something a little gentler on your roots, palm rolling is a great alternative to twisting. Instead of twisting the new growth, I roll it between my palms to shape it. It's easier on your scalp over time and a lot of my clients prefer it once their locs mature.

Styling

Locs don't have to look one way all the time. I offer updos, curls, barrel twists, and other styles depending on what you're going for, whether that's an everyday look or something for a special occasion.

Detoxing

Every so often, your scalp and locs need a deeper clean to get rid of buildup from products, sweat, or just everyday life. I recommend a detox treatment every few months to keep things fresh underneath.

Taking Care of Your Locs at Home

What you do between appointments matters just as much as what happens in the chair.

A Few Things I Always Tell My Clients

  • Keep your scalp clean, buildup causes more problems than people realize
  • Use a light oil to keep your scalp and locs moisturized
  • Sleep with a satin or silk bonnet to cut down on frizz
  • Don’t overdo it on products, less is usually more
  • Stick to a regular retwist or palm roll schedule, so things don’t get out of hand
